The Trials of Planning a Winter Birthday Party with Your Parent

This story is part of our birthday series for children aged 5-7 years.

December and January birthdays can be tricky for children. With Christmas and their birthday being so closely packed together, the wait for the next special day can feel endless. Children can be full of birthday celebration ideas that don’t suit the time of year; or they long for the more traditional summer beach, barbecue and bouncy castle parties. Making it special or separate from Christmas celebrations can be difficult – here’s our story!

My Winter Birthday Plan

“Mummy can I ask you a question?”

She looks at me warily – I’ve never understood why she does that, because it’s a mummy’s job to answer questions – every day, all day. I do try and ask Daddy as well, but he doesn’t always listen. He says it’s a skill. Mummy says it’s not fair. And then they laugh at each other – weird.

But back to my question!

This one is tricky – because my birthday is my first, no second, no first favourite day of the year and I have to wait a whole year every year for it to happen again. And my birthday means I’m in charge (Tomos says that’s not true, so I still need to talk to Mummy about that).

And if you are in charge, then you get to choose the lunch and dinner. And this is important because Mummy gets to choose nearly every day of the year – something about a perk of being a grown-up – so this day is my day. And I’m not going to waste this golden opportunity.

“Now for my birthday tea...”

Just so you know I’ve already arranged lunch – local restaurant which does roast ham and then really yummy ice-cream for pudding.

And presents – prior to Christmas I advised them on the current necessary items. And I even helpfully let Mummy know about an acceptable wrapping paper option. I might need to remind her of that.

And, well, after the debacle of Pass the Parcel at New Year – I mean, who put clues between the layers instead of chocolate? Enough said.

And she forgot about the balloons!!! So that’s a daily reminder. See how helpful I’m being.

And I got a volcano set for Christmas that we are going to create an explosion from at my party. Mummy says we probably need to do that outside, but I don’t know the weather yet so will keep checking it about that too – so many questions.

But someone has to keep on top of things.

But the question now is about my birthday tea....

“So it IS about your birthday?” Mummy asks me.

Well of course it is – it’s only 3 weeks away – what else would there be to talk about? Well, thinking about it – we haven’t decided on my birthday day trip yet.

“Mummy! I’ve got another question!”
