Easy Chores for Kids Doesn't Need to Be a Big Drama
Tomos (Aged 10)
Urgh, it’s Wednesday. What’s wrong with Wednesday you might ask? The school week is halfway done. Mummy always cooks curry for tea – and that is my favourite dinner. There are no after-school clubs so we should get longer to play and watch telly – so why the grumbling?
Because Wednesday is cleaning day.
We have to help Mummy clean. And today it’s our bedroom so not only do we have to clean, we have to tidy it up first.
And this is a fact – Luc makes so much more mess than me so it always takes ages…. And it’s not even my stuff!
“Why do we have to do chores Mum?” I complain.
I mean – what is the point when it’s only going to get messy and dirty again?
“Because it’s helpful!” Mum says happily.
Helpful. Useful. Being part of the team. Blah blah blah. I’ve heard that story before.
Did you know that some of my friends get paid for doing chores at home? Paid. With actual money.
And what do I get? Nothing. Not even one measly little penny.
I just get to be part of the happy, helpful cleaning crew.
And then just when you think you’re done, she’s back. With more.
Tomos can you just take this?. Tomos, can you just do that? Tomos, can you just move this? Tomos, Tomos, Tomos!!
Just dust the mirrors, wipe the shelves, tidy the toys, make your bed, put your clothes away. Easy peasy. It won’t take you two seconds. That’s what she said.
You. Just. wait.
“Mum, I’m done!”
“Tomos, can you just bring the washing basket down for me and…. ” She calls back up from the kitchen.
“Seriously I’m not your slave!”
I stomp off to find said washing basket because she never leaves it in the same place.
Now you see what I have to put up with on Wednesdays. I need a break!
“Mum, can you get me a snack?”
“Seriously I’m not your slave!” She’s mimics me.
She thinks she’s so funny.
