It’s easy to make kid friendly bird feeders. We had our own ‘expert’ to guide us through the process as he had already make some at school. The essential bit of information that was missing from his instructions were that it does take a few days for the birds to realise the bird feeders are there so don’t expect them to arrive within 5 minutes of putting them up. Here is our story…

A Step by Step Guide to Making Kid Friendly Bird Feeders
Luc (Aged 7)
“Mummy this is Step 1.”
We are making bird feeders for all the birds in our garden, so they won’t grow hungry.
“You need to pick a toilet roll tube.” I tell her. I still don’t think we have enough but Mummy assures me that this is all we have. And no, we are not going to take the paper off the new ones just to feed the birds. Shame.
Mummy reaches across the table to pick up one.
“I’ll do it for you.” I interrupt her.
“Why can’t I choose my own?” She asks, sitting back.
“Because I have made these bird feeders before and that makes me the expert.”

“Step 2, we need to spread the lard onto the cardboard.”
“Like this?” She asks but she is trying not to get her hands sticky. Oh dear Mummy.
“No. You have to get it on every single bit so it will get a little bit messy.” I pick up my own bird feeder tube and start smearing the lard all over it with my fingers.
“Do you want to do my one for me?” Mummy asks hopefully.
“No Mummy, because then you won’t learn how.” I shake my head.

“Step 3. Now this is the best bit. You put all the seeds into a plastic container.”
“Is this enough?” Mummy pours the smallest amount into my bowl.
“No Mummy, you need lots and lots because we don’t want the birds to be hungry. I’ll tell you when to stop.”
It takes a few tries but finally she fills the tub to almost the top.
“And now you roll the tube in the seeds and the seeds will stick to it. And make sure there aren’t any gaps or spaces.”
I watch her closely as she starts to roll her bird feeder. She glances up at me.
“Like this?” She asks.
“Let me do it.” I sigh. I have had loads of practice at school because we made over one hundred bird feeders. I wanted to make one hundred for our garden but Mummy said no. But I think we might be able to do twenty.
“You start spreading the lard on the next one and I’ll do the rolling bit.” I take her bird feeder and start rolling. This is the best bit.
“Oh thanks.”

“Step 4 – we put the string through with the help of a grown-up. And then we hang them in the garden. Let’s go Mummy.”
“We’ll put some here, on the washing line.” I start to hang up our bird feeders. “And some on this tree. And some over here.”
“And then we get the binoculars and you have to hide so the birds won’t see you.” I get Tomos to help me make a bird-hide in the garden out of chairs and blankets.
And then we wait. And wait.
“Mummy!” I yell loudly. “There aren’t any birds coming.”
“You may have to wait longer than a minute.” She calls back. Loudly of course – seriously Mummy!
