Helping kids overcome their fears is not easy. It can be hard to know as a parent when to push gently and when to stand back. But if you can be there, supporting them in their fears, they may experience something wonderful. Or not. Here is our story…

Helping Kids Overcome their Fears Starts With You
Luc (8 years old)
“Everybody ready?” The lady asks brightly.
Tomos is literally bouncing. He can’t wait to go down the zip-line. And Daddy is ready.
But I don’t think I am ready. It’s really, really high up here.
“Just remember, I can’t give you a push. You are going to have to jump.” The lady says again.
“Can I run and jump?” Tomos asks excitedly. And the lady nods her head. I don’t want to though.

“Daddy, I want to get down.” I reach over for his hand, just as Tomos launches past me with a loud roar. I look down as he starts to fly down the zip-line. “It’s too high.”
I start to inch backwards but the harness stops me.
The lady is waiting. There are lots of people behind us waiting. Daddy is reaching over and he grabs my hand.
“Come on mate, we have to go.” He mutters as he gives me a little pull.
And suddenly I’m flying. Really fast. And really high up!!
“Daddy!” I yell.

But I am going faster than Daddy. And the ground is coming closer. I can see the end is coming.
I even let go with my hands, just for a minute. And it wasn’t too bad.
Mummy is waiting at the bottom when we land. She was supposed to be watching us but whenever I looked over, she had her hands over her eyes. I don’t know what she was scared about. I was the one up really high in the tree!
“Are you okay? Was it fun?” She asks worriedly.
“I am never doing that again.” I announce loudly over Tomos’s shouts of can we do it again.
“Me neither.” She mutters back. “Who needs cake?”
