Child asleep with a buzzy bee after bedtime songs

Bedtime Songs: A Kids Way to a Successful Bedtime

Bedtime songs, nursery rhymes, lullabies – whatever you call them, they are essential for a good bedtime routine for children. There is an extensive variety of bedtime lullabies for you to choose; from the classic lullabies to made-up nursery rhymes. Every family will have their own personal favourites. Here is our story…

This story is part of our sleep series.

Why It's Impossible to Sleep Without My Best Bedtime Song

Luc (Aged 7)

My parents are obsessed with sleep. Why else would they insist that I go to bed every night? And sleep. Apparently it’s not enough to just go to bed, you actually have to go to sleep. I think Mummy and Daddy actually look forward to going to sleep – I couldn’t tell you why. It’s something that I will probably understand when I’m older.

So here I am, with another day ending with me having to go to bed. Following the same bedtime routine: brush teeth, protest, toilet, protest, choose story, protest their choice, read story, protest having to finish, cuddle, protest, yawn, protest that said yawn happened, get into bed, protest, toilet (they protest) – and then we reach bedtime songs.

Protest…

Only joking. I love bedtime songs really. My grandmother does the best bedtime songs (sometimes we even get to jump off the bed), but she can’t stay with us all the time. So most nights Daddy does them.

Tonight, I think I will sing them with him. Loudly! In my worst singing voice!

“Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are

Up above the world so high

Like a banana boat in the sky…”

Daddy always pretends to forget the words and puts in funny things like banana boats!

A flying banana boat. I think I would like to go on a boat made out of bananas.

“Daddy? Would you like to go on a flying boat made out of bananas?”

Question (they protest), ask question again and again and again and again.

“No. Goodnight.”

“But…”

“Goodnight!”

Kiss. Cuddle. Sleep.

Wait a minute. He didn’t sing my buzzy bee song. I could try and sing to myself I suppose. I know there are a lot of buzzy’s in my buzzy bee song. And the buzzy bee flies in the sky just like the banana boat.

Oh, now I can’t remember all the words. And I really, really can’t sleep without my buzzy bee song. I get out of bed.

“Mummy! I can’t sleep without my buzzy bee bedtime song.”
