The Perfect Bedtime Songs

Mummy (9 years parenting)

And relax…

Don’t you just love that moment when everything falls silent – and when I say everything, I really mean the children. When the children fall silent at the end of the day, when they are finally tucked up in bed. When all the extra toilet checks, sips of water, stories, and bedtime songs are finished. And they peacefully drift off to sleep.

That moment when you can collapse onto some form of soft furniture and breathe.

“Mummy! I can’t sleep without my buzzy bee song!”

Why do kids wait until you have sat down for just long enough to get comfortable before dragging you back up again? It hurts. It causes actual physical pain.

“I really can’t sleep Mummy.” Luc crawls into bed next to me and snuggles in. “I need my buzzy bee song.”

“But Daddy just sang Buzzy Buzzy Buzzy Buzzy Bee.”

“No he didn’t”

“Yes he did. I was there. You were too busy singing your own song at the top of your voice.”

Child singing loudly while Dad is slumped on the floor

“I did try and sing it to myself Mummy. But I can’t remember all the words.”

Same bedtime song every night for seven years – I don’t think I will able to forget it.

Here comes the pain. “Back to bed!”

He protests. Another toilet check. I protest. Rearrange blankets. He protests. Rearrange blankets again.

“Ready? Buzzy, buzzy…”

“No, you have to start with twinkle, twinkle Mummy.”

Grrr.

“Twinkle, twinkle, little star

How I wonder what you are

Up above the world so high, like a diamond…”

“No Mummy, that’s not how Daddy does it.”

“Shall I start again?”

“No, Can you go and get Daddy to come and do it properly?”

Protest!
