Family enjoying watching fireworks on Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night: Great Children’s Activities for All the Family

It’s Bonfire Night! Fireworks, sparklers, a sign that winter is nearly here and Christmas is on its way. But you don’t need to go to a big bonfire night display to have a great time. A night in the garden with a few sparklers and a load of laughter can be just as memorable. Here is our story…

This story is part of our Bonfire Night series.

The 4 Rules of Bonfire Night

Mummy (9 years parenting)

Wow, the garden is really dark. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all. Because who am I kidding? It doesn’t matter if you are six or sixty – or thirty-odd in this case – there are still monsters hiding in the dark.

“Mummy! Come on!” The boys whine impatiently.

“Just getting a torch!”

“We’ve already got them!” They yell and they shine them right into my eyes.

Rule number 1: No shining the light directly into people’s eyes!

We get a bucket of water ready, while the boys intermittently blind us with their torch light. And open the sparklers box.

This is the first Bonfire Night we have ever bought sparklers to play with in the garden. Apparently we have deemed the boys old and sensible enough to be safe with them.

Not entirely convinced of our decision at this particular moment as they dance around the pitch-black garden, crashing into things.

“What was that?”

“The bucket of water!” Tomos laughs sheepishly.

Rule number 2: Keep a safe distance away from anybody else at all times

I was always a little bit scared of sparklers as a child. There is that moment when they whoosh into life and you are suddenly holding fire.

And my dad was hovering anxiously making sure you didn’t accidentality singe any of your siblings.

“What words are going to write?” I ask the boys as we wait for Daddy to fill up a second bucket of water. “You could write your names.”

“Or poo or wee or…!” They start to giggle hysterically as they think of all the words that little boys find hilariously funny.

Rule number 3: No rude words

“Can we start now?” The boys jump about as the second water bucket is filled and placed a safe distance away from their prancing feet.

“You need the hold them away from you. Keep your arms straight. At all times!” I warn sternly.

“Like a sword Mummy?” Luc asks excitedly. “Like a fire sword?”

Rule number 4: Sparklers are not swords. And shall not be used in battle at any point.
