High School Open Days: Choose the Right School for You

Navigating the high school open days is the first part of your journey to apply for a high school. They can be big, overwhelming and exhausting. But also fun, magical and exciting. Here is our story…

This story is part of our school series.

When High School Feels Enormous!

Tomos (Aged 10)

It’s really big. The gates are big. The buildings are big. The field is massive. Even the trees are big.

Some big boys dressed in school uniform take us around this high school. It’s the last one on our list to visit – and it is huge.

I am definitely going to get lost here.

“Look Tomos!” Luc shouts. “They have a long-jump! I can’t wait to come to this school!”

He is so embarrassing.

We look at the sports hall, where they had lots of sports games. And the design technology room where they made me and Luc a pencil each with our names on.

“Urgh, will I have still have to do French?” I whisper to Mummy. Not my favourite subject.

Maths looks better. They have some books left out on the table. Daddy opens one and shows me.

“Dad! That looks really hard!”

“Does it?” Daddy looks worried and then sheepish. “That’s because it’s Year 9!” He shuts the book quickly.

But what if all high school work is really hard? Will I get detention if I can’t do it? There is so much to think about here.

They take us to the cooking room next. And there are lots of biscuits for us to eat. And they are yummy. Even Luc likes them and he is very picky when it comes to biscuits. I think I would be able to make biscuits.

The science room is even better! They have lots of experiments for us to try.

We are able to make fire in the teachers’ hands. Like really big fire. They even let Luc have a go even though he isn’t old enough for high school.

And there is a gym, another big field, tennis courts, a lunch room, and guess what?!?

They have some animals! Lizards, hamsters, alpacas and a horse! I am starting to like this school – even if it is enormous.

I move a little closer to Mummy because she is not big. I’ve grown way past her shoulder in the last few months and now we are almost the same size. Maybe by next year this school won’t feel as big.

It might even be a little bit fun. Only a little bit – it’ll still be school after all.
