Children starting the new school year with unhappy faces

New School Year: What Children Worry About

When our children start a new school year, it can a time of uncertainty and anxiety. Many are heading back to a place they are familiar with, with friends they know well and a routine that will feel the norm within a few days. But that first day of the new school year will still hold a lot of unknowns from new teachers to new classrooms. Here is our story…

Back to School: It Will be Better Tomorrow

Tomos (aged 10)

It’s just another day. Just another normal day. Just another school day.

Or not. I think as I lie in bed. How are the six week holidays over for another year already? No more getting up when you want, pyjama days, all-day lego building, holidays – even the long list of chores wasn’t too bad in the end.

Now its back to school. Just another normal day but with new shoes, new classroom, new teacher, new rules. So, not really another normal day.

I pull on my new school jumper. I can’t lose this today. I set a record last year – I lost it at the end of the second week. Mummy was not happy.

I’ve also lost a lunch-box, a pair of PE shorts, two coats and my glasses case.

I’m sure there are elves living under our school just waiting for you to put something down and turn away. Then they strike and sneak it back to their lair under school. Because I really don’t mean to lose things, they just seem to disappear.

We have to be ready even earlier today because we have to take pictures before we go. We used to take them after school but Mummy wants to do it before I manage to lose something else.

“Smile, say cheese.” Mum and Dad say. Seriously parents are so annoying sometimes.

“Can we go now?”

Once we are on the yard waiting for the doors to open, Luc tells Mummy she can have a cuddle but not a kiss. I am definitely not going to do a kiss. Or a cuddle. I’m going into Year 6 now and that would be so embarrassing.

I do give Mummy a little wave before I go in. Just so she knows I’m okay.

And I think I’m okay – mostly.

I just wish I knew where I will be sitting. I wish I knew if my new teacher is going to shout. I wish I knew if the lessons will be too hard or if they will be alright. I wish I knew when lunchtime will be.

Tomorrow will be better. Tomorrow, I will know. Tomorrow I can walk in and go straight to my seat. Tomorrow my teacher will know my name. Tomorrow my shoes might be more comfortable – well I hope so anyway.

And tomorrow I’ll be able to see if I can break my record and lose my jumper within a week! I just need to leave it somewhere easy for those little elves to get their hands on it…
