Older Kids Sharing Grows Strong Family Relationships

Mummy (10 years parenting)

I really think my children take this sharing thing too far. Yes of course I want them to share their toys, pencils and so on.

But do they really have to share every single little bug that one of them brings home from school?

It’s like a very extreme case of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). And I’m really not sure we all need to experience the particulars of this illess. I mean, its just a stupid horrible cold.

Yet I hear Tomos sneezing and there goes my carefully planned out day. Not like I was trying to catch up from Luc being ill or anything.

Tomos comes in looking very sorry for himself and climbs into my bed. I notice he has got his favourite teddy back with him.

He’s been really kind over the last few days and let Luc have it while he’s been feeling rubbish and out of sorts.

And I know it’s not been easy for him. He’s growing up, finding more of his own personality. Finding out more of how he likes to do things. And sometimes having a younger sibling touching, moving and sharing your ‘stuff’ is just downright annoying.

“Is Tomos going to school?” Luc trails after his brother.

“I don’t think so. I think you have shared.” I say gloomily. Luc suddenly dashes off as I climb out of bed.

My day has begun, another day of having a coughing, spluttering, snot, whinging, miserable little shadow. You know when people tell you that you will miss it when your kids grow up? I’m pretty sure I won’t miss these days.

“Here you go Tomos.” Luc runs back in and carefully hands Tomos his most prized possession. His soft toy frog that is almost like an imaginary friend. “You can watch Fred while you are poorly.”

And for that moment I was wholeheartedly proud of them. Privileged to witness a simple, beautiful moment between brothers that they will have forgotten about by bedtime but I will treasure forever.
