Do you have a sore loser in your family? Chances are you have more than one. Children naturally find losing challenging and it can cause all sorts of big feelings from shame and embarrassment to anger and losing control. Here is a story from a few years ago when our children were younger when losing was a massive deal with one and messing about was the sole aim of the other. Here is our story…

Why Sore Losers Keep Spoiling Family Board Games
Tomos (Aged 8)
There are rules to every game. Rules for everyone to follow. They come in a booklet in every box. They are set up neatly in categories in the book from how to set up to how to play. And most importantly and I pause here to make sure you are listening… Rules show you how to win.
Until you play with my brother.
We are playing a pirate themed snake’s and ladder’s board. On the box it says ‘Age 5-9’ so Luc is completely old enough to play it by the rules. He is 5 now so it’s totally unnecessary to make it a little bit easier for him to play because he’s younger blah blah. The burdens of being the eldest, I tell you.

But today, he’s decided that instead of counting along the board normally 1, 2, 3, – you get the drill, his pirate is going to hop all over the place crashing into ladders, being chased by snakes and diving off the ship and getting eaten by the shark that’s in the sea at the bottom.
And what’s worse is that Mummy and Daddy and Luc are all finding this completely hilarious. I am not finding this funny at all. How will we know who wins if we don’t play properly? And if they let Luc win (again I might add) – he cheated!
It’s just not fair. And definitely NOT funny.

As my children have gotten older, I have found that they were both big sore losers around the ages of 5 to 10. Here is an article that address how you can help turn your sore loser into a gracious one with a little bit of practice.
