Best Parent Pranks: Always keep them Guessing
Mummy (10 years parenting)
What is happening?
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
What is that noise?
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
Why is it not stopping?
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
What time is it? Is it morning? It’s pitch black!
Urgh! Why are you putting a light on?

I roll over in the semi-gloom, completely disorientated as my dear husband, partner on this delightful parenting journey fumbles to turn his bedroom lamp on.
Midnight. Why is it midnight?
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
“Turn it off before it wakes the boys.” I mutter thumping my pillow into a more comfortable ear muff.
“I don’t know what ‘it’ is!” He’s already climbing out of bed.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
I can hear him stumbling around in the dark.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP

My brain is starting to wake up a little bit now. Where have I heard that beeping before?
“It’s not the smoke alarm, oven, microwave, dehumidifier, carbon monoxide alarm…” Hubby comes back in blearily.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
“What about Tomos’ stopwatch – doesn’t that beep sometimes?” I give in and haul myself into a sitting position.
“Nope.”
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
Why is this not waking them up? Usually the sensitive little ninjas are in the minute you open a bag of sweets or muse about watching a quiet bit of telly for 10 minutes.
But this incessant BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP is the perfect white noise?

“I know what it is!” Hubby is awake now with that look on his face. He has had a prank lightbulb moment and now knows exactly what is happening. “It’s that little blue alarm clock.”
He’s prowling around our bedroom, hunting in drawers and under the bed.
“Got it!”
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
“Then turn it off.” I mutter, sliding back down into bed.
“I don’t know how!” He throws it towards me laughing. At least he finds humour in this situation. I manically press all the buttons while he climbs back into bed.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
I throw it back at him and watch in disgust as he simply takes the batteries out and it finally, blessedly goes quiet.
I try to go back to sleep but if I listen hard enough, I can still hear that BEEP BEEP in my head.
“Can you go back to sleep?” I whisper.
“No. I’m busy plotting my payback prank!”
