Sometimes we assume that the best school morning routines are structured, calm and orderly. Or that as parents we need to lose valuable sleep to ensure a better start to the day. But sometimes the best way for our kids to start their days is to be able to play, laugh and be a little bit silly. And it won’t do you any harm either. Here is our story…

The Best School Morning Routines Don't Need to Start Early
Mummy (10 years parenting)
Not again! How can it be Monday already? Are you sure there are seven days in a week? Because right now I think Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays all seem to have taken a hike. A very long hike. A hike that I’m not sure they are coming back from.
And its always a million times more painful after a school holiday. When the days seem to run at double the speed of a normal school or work day. Although time seems to be running at triple speed this morning because we are in no way ready to leave the house yet.
Who am I kidding? I’m not even out of bed yet.

“Right! Time to go!” It’s remarkable how quickly you can get ready when there is only ten minutes to get the kids to school and you don’t really care about how you look. I mean its winter so a coat and hat will cover a multitude of mishaps.
“I can’t find my bag.” Tomos moans grumpily as he walks out of his bedroom. Major bed hair going on but at least he is dressed.
Luc, on the other hand, is still choosing the right pair of socks for the day. A process, which I have learned cannot be rushed.

I take a breath. A long one!
Maybe those trendy mum morning routines where you get up at 3am to find your calm before the day begins are the way to go. Several quiet, peaceful, albeit a little dark and cold hours to ease gently into the day.
To not have to rush. To have the space to get it all together before the day begins.
But who am I kidding? – sleep when the baby sleeps is my mantra and I’m sticking to it.
Obviously my boys are no longer babies but sleep when the kids are asleep works just as well in my book.

I exhale slowly.
Luc has finally chosen his socks but has now engaged in some sort of battle that means that instead of putting his socks on his feet, they have now ended up on on his hands.
“Mum! I can’t get the button undone!” He launches onto our bed.
“That’s because your socks are on your hands.” I mutter. “I’m pretty sure this is a lot easier if your fingers are free.”
He laughs.
Deep breath. It’s only Monday.
