Children packing to go away for a weekend with their grandparents

The Best Weekend Away with Our Grandparents

The grandparents took the children away on holiday for the weekend. Even though we are a close family, the time apart was great for both us as a couple and for the children and their grandparents. The grandparent-grandchild relationship is unique and can be really special. Our children had an absolutely amazing time – here is their story.

Our Grandparents are so Much More Fun than Our Parents

Luc (aged 8)

“Mummy, Daddy, we are back.”

“Hello! Did you have a good time with Nain and Dee?”

We have just been on the best holiday ever with our grandparents. I collapse on the sofa, exhausted and Mummy sits down next to me.

“I really didn’t want to come home. But Nain said we had to.”

“That’s a shame.” Mummy murmurs.

“What did you do?” Mummy asks.

“We went swimming every single day. And Dee let us go on the big slide 5 times in a row.”

“5?”

“Yes!” I say gleefully because Mummy only lets us do 3 times before we have to do something else.

“And it was really rough. It was so rough that Dee only went on it once because on this slide you get thrown about from side to side all the way down. And it goes really really fast! Would you like to try it Mummy?”

“No.” Mummy looks horrified – she is too scared to go on the big slides.

“And then Dee waited for us at the bottom so we could go on again and again and again. So next time you and Daddy come, Daddy could just wait for us at the bottom and then we can go 10 times in a row.”

“How wonderful for Daddy.” Mummy murmurs.

“And we played table tennis. Nain and Dee played doubles with us.” I continue. “Nain is so much better than you at sports Mummy.”

“And we did loads of other stuff like archery and climbing. And I got to have ice-cream at the restaurant and you go to do it yourself and I got loads and loads and loads.”

“Wow! That sounds amazing.” Mummy cuddles me a bit closer.

“Did you manage to shower in between all the swimming and ice-creams?” She asks.

“Yes, we showered twice every day because we had our own bathroom attached to our bedroom. And the shower had two places where the water came out. It was so much better than our shower.” I tell her. I really wish we could live on holiday forever.

“What did you do Mummy when we weren’t here?” I turn to her sternly. “I hope there wasn’t any kissing. That is so gross.”

The Importance of Wider Family including Grandparents

Not every family has grandparents but psychologists have identified the benefits for both parents and children of having a ‘grandparent’ role in their lives. This can be an aunt, uncle, close friend, God-parent. Here is a great article taking through some of these benefits.
