The best family photos are not about everybody looking amazing or smiling perfectly. The best family photos are the ones which capture a memory to treasure in future years. Nothing has been designed and no outfits have been chosen and it’s hit or miss whether everybody’s face is clean. Here are my 5 ways to always capture the best family photos.

The Best Family Photos Come in All Shapes and Sizes
1. “Cheese!”...
When it comes to taking the best family photos, it’s best to steer clear of cheese. It’s great on toast but not so much fun when growled through the gritted teeth of the photographer.
Instead get everyone laughing through a variety of poses. Grumpy faces, pouting, ninja poses. Be silly and keep clicking. There will be a gem of a family picture amongst the blinks, mid-conversation and half-faces.
And remember don’t even go near “tomatoes!”

2. Make a memory...
It’s important to remember that the best family photos have a positive memory attached to them. This photo will help you remember the moments of the past.
When you look back in years to come you won’t marvel at how wonderful the photograph is, how everybody was posed in exactly the right place, how each outfit perfectly complimented each-other. You’ll remember the moment, what led up to it and what happened afterwards.
So remember when you are next snapping away to enhance the memory of the day, not ruin it by trying to achieve the perfect shot.

3. Imperfections are okay...
The best family photos come in a variety of poses. Not everybody has to be facing forward smiling, open eyes and face clean.
Make an effort to catch the natural, catch the funny, catch the silly, catch the tired, catch the grumpy. Imperfect family photos will bring back stories and memories from the past and create special bonding moments as you retell them in the future.

4. Short & snappy...
And finally, don’t waste the moment by trying to take a photo. Take a few but keep it short so that you can also savour the moment, experience the moment, be in the moment.
Family photos are amazing and a wonderful thing to have. But experiencing family life is essential to. For those of us who are always the one taking the pictures from the side-lines, sometimes we need to get in the frame, we need to be part of the moment.

5. Share your story...
The best family photos are hilarious so don’t just keep the ‘perfect’ ones. Keep the ‘rubbish’ ones too. Children love to look through old photos and find out what was going on. Share your photos with them and be able to tell the stories behind them and those family photos will become more precious than you will ever realise.
