The Troublesome Wobbly Tooth
Mummy (9 years parenting)
“Mummy! Daddy! My tooth’s gone! And I can’t find it anywhere!”
Not exactly how I was planning to wake up on this particular Saturday morning. Just to clarify – the most stubborn of teeth was still attached at point of sleep last night – so this was not a joyful “oh the toothfairy has been!” cry.
This was a distraught – my tooth has fallen out at some point in the last ten hours and now we have no idea where it has gone!
Long ago when we thought about having children and what our future would look like – I totally underestimated the trouble 20 baby teeth were going to cause. And as we have two children that’s actually 40 baby teeth.
Everyone talks about the baby teething phases – the long nights, the painful crying, red cheeks, temperatures, endless dribbling, when they clamp down on your finger and refuse to let go – oh the pain! Really the list is endless.
And the sigh of relief when that last tooth comes in…
And then we all know that at some point their baby teeth will fall out. Simple.
Oh no. Not simple at all. These teeth can take days, sometimes weeks to fall out. Adult teeth start poking through at all sorts of random angles and places.
Luc has been in terrible pain all week and this tooth just simply refused to budge. It’s been half hanging out for the last two days and it kept clinging on! Watching older children in pain brings just as many challenges as the distant, dark baby-teething days.
And then there is the tooth fairy!
Or not in my case. My children have no intention of letting a ‘fairy’ take their teeth. They see their teeth as specimens to store and marvel over. I have jars of teeth in my house on display.
But this was Luc’s first tooth, and he was desperate to start his own tooth collection like his brother.
So here I am, hunting through his bed for the lost tooth. Seriously when did I sign up to be the tooth fairy?
Maybe the arch enemy of the tooth fairy is some kind of weird spider that lurks under the bed ready to steal the tooth before she arrives. I really hope there are no spiders as I crawl under the bed – what we do for our kids.
Deep down I know he’s probably swallowed it, but I draw the line at searching through his poo! I’m going to blame the spider.
And just in case you were thinking that it saved me £1. No such luck. They may not have any intention of putting their tooth under their pillow and letting some fairy take it to places unknown. But they still have every intention of getting their £1.
