The Benefits of a Quiet Kid-Free Weekend at Home

Mummy (10 years parenting)

And they are back from their weekend away with their grandparents.

The quiet stillness of the last few days is filled with chatter and questions. The clear floors are covered with shoes, bags and just general stuff that kids seem to leave scattered about.

The empty chairs are suddenly filled with bigger bodies – like they spent the last three days just growing.

Their conversation is filled with excited stories and unflattering comparisons because grandparents are so much more fun than parents.

And then they pause to ask what we did?

What did we do with our child-free, responsibility-free, routine-free, get just to be actual grown-ups again seventy two hours?

“Well, we ate a lot of cake.” I said. Yes, I got to make cake and eat cake. And I got to eat cake whenever and wherever I wanted.

And the slices could be as big as we wanted because we weren’t setting reasonable, sensible portion-sized examples to our kids.

We could eat cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner if we wanted because the cake-police were away.

“You made a cake without us!” They burst out indignantly.

I smile. Yes I did.

“And we went to the cinema.”

And we had all the popcorn and sweets to ourselves.

And we got to see a grown-up film. Okay, so it was still a bit action-packed for my taste as it was hubby’s choice but that was fine.

Because I just napped through the boring bits. I was not responsible for anybody’s else bladder or boredom or inability to open a packet of sweets themselves or keep track of their stuff in the dark.

“You fell asleep!” They burst out shocked.

Yes I did.

“We didn’t wake up until 10am and we didn’t get out of bed until midday.” I said in a dramatic whisper.

Because we didn’t have to. There was no alarm of play cars crashing right outside our bedroom door. Or calls for breakfast. Or just noise.

It was peaceful and quiet in the morning. So we slept. We actually took a break from the busyness of our lives and parenting and caught up on some sleep.

“You stayed in bed until 12 o Clock.” They chorused together, horrified.

Yes I did.

And it was awesome!
