Start building better money habits from the beginning with your kids. Our eldest has just started high school and he needs lots of things for school. So, we have given him the responsibility for using some of his pocket money to buy the things he needs like stationary and other small budget items. But it doesn’t always go to plan. Here is our story…
This story is part of our pocket money series.
Why it is Important to Start Budgeting from an Early Age
Tomos (aged 11)
“Mum, I’m home!” Tomos shouts as he walks in from school. He drops his heavy school bag to the floor with a loud thud.
“Did you have a good day?” I ask as he collapses on the sofa next to me.
“Yes but I lost my ruler. I can’t find it in my bag. I think I might have left it in science.” He yawns tiredly. “Can you get me a new one when you next go shopping?”
“What was that thing we did at the beginning of the year to cover the cost of essentials?” I muse gently. He looks at me completely blankly.
“I thought we upped your pocket money so that you had the money to get your own school supplies.”
“Oh yeah, I remember now.” He gets up, no longer interested in our conversation. “I’ll get it next time.”
“The next time what?” I call after.
“The next time I lose my ruler.” He shouts back as he heads to the kitchen to get snacks.
