Mummy (10 years parenting)

A gentle river ride he told me. A gentle river ride. With maybe a little drop at the end. Just a little one he promised.

You would be forgiven for thinking it was my children who had conned me into this particular harrowing experience – but no! It was my dear husband himself. And after nearly 15 years, I really should have known better.

I’m currently sitting in a boat – where the seats inside were rather suspiciously wet – getting sprayed with several jets of freezing cold water from both sides as it looms closer and closer…

The assent. What goes up must come down!

I suppose from a distance it didn’t look that high. But now that we keep going up and up and up, I am actually terrified.

I cling to Luc who is seven. I am actually clinging to a seven year old.

We get to the top and it lets us go.

And I scream. Probably the longest and loudest scream I have ever done in my life (including labour). Eyes shut, hands clenched, I have no idea how long this horror is going to last.

There is no point trying to dodge the water jets any more.

The ride doesn’t stop, you just have to jump off at the right moment. Not the easiest thing to do when your legs feel like jelly.

There are people in the queue with those big plastic ponchos on. Clever clogs.

We didn’t even bring a towel to wipe our faces. And I’m literally soaked right through to my underwear.

The boys (and yes I include my husband in this description) are laughing so hard. Luc is telling everyone at the top of his voice how loud I screamed. No secrets with that one.

“There’s a dryer over there!” I march over.

“It’s £4!” Hubby chooses that moment to announce. He knows how stingy I am really and that this would usually stop me. I wouldn’t usually pay for something the sunshine will do. But I feel that these are extenuating circumstances.

“I don’t care! A little drop!” I mutter. “A little drop!?!”

“You were very brave!” He gives me a cuddle in the dryer.

“You owe for me for this – big time.”
