Experiencing an Emergency C-Section – A Baby’s Point of View

Whenever birthdays come around it always makes me think about our boy’s births. The moment where the dream of a newborn becomes a very big reality. It’s impossible to know what our newborn babies are thinking when they are pulled from the womb during an emergency c-section, so I’ve taken a little bit of creative license with this story. But our firstborn didn’t seem in any particular rush to enter the world – even though he had grown rather large and absolutely hated being wrapped up tightly in any kind of blanket. Here’s his story…

Our First Birth via Emergency C-Section.

This story is part of our newborn series.

Did I Mention the Hair?

Tomos: (Age: 2 Minutes)

It all started this morning. Everything else had been normal – except breakfast. There was definitely no breakfast this morning. And then some kind of strange squeezing – quite regular squeezing. It grew quite relaxing after the initial shock, so I settled back down to my favourite morning acrobatics. Foot here, arm stretch there, neck and head up. Or maybe that is down now? It’s all got a bit tight in here. I used to be able to reach out fully, but that’s not worked in a while.

And then nothing. No lunch. No tea. No snacks. Nothing. Zilch. Just this squeezing – again and again and again. Just a normal (ish) day.

And argh! Something touched my head. And when I say touched – I actually mean grabbed and is pulling and pulling and pulling.

And the light is brighter and what is that noise? Where’s the usual thud-thud soundtrack? A little monotonous, but right now I’m not complaining!

What is happening? There's a hole opening up and I think I'm about to go through it!

That was not fun.

I try and open my eyes, but there is light everywhere and noise – and I think I might be flying? Oops, I just did a big wee. I stretch and it works – hands, feet, arms, leg, neck, head – it all moves. The walls have gone. It’s been quite a tight fit for a while. But now – wow! I try it again and gah – it’s cold.

Something scratchy drops over my head. Urgh, get off.

You're going to rub my hair off

I just spent the last week growing it and now all that effort is going to be for nothing. That’s it! I’ve had enough – wait what was that noise? Was that me? Let’s try that again! Yep, it was me – and look, I’m doing it again.

Oof, alright, careful with how tight that thing is – I just got free! Arms, legs, hands, feet are no longer free. Let’s try the noise again. Hey, I think I’m getting better at it.

I land on something warm. Soft. Normal. Thud, thud, thud – I know that sound. Comfortable, steady, soothing. My ears are definitely working better out here. It’s back. I know this place. I rest my head – it’s heavy you know- and nuzzle in. I try to focus my eyes but they haven’t quite caught up with the ears yet. She’s here – a slightly blurry shape but I think she’s looking at me. There’s less noise now, less light, I think I can rest here.

It’s been a long day (did I mention the lack of snacks?). And a long week really – did I mention the hair? (no way was I coming out like an egg!). I need to check on the hair, but my arms are still pinned – I wrestle a little bit but not too much. I’m too comfy.

I might just sleep – just for a little while.
