Tummy bug. Two words that pour dread into the heart of every parent. And with winter upon us and Christmas just around the corner, we have already fallen victim to the usual coughs, colds and sneezes. But there is nothing like a good old tummy bug to throw the whole family out for a week! Here is our story…
This story is part of our illnesses & injuries series.
The Unexpected Strike of the Tummy Bug
Tomos (8 years old)
I don’t feel so good.
My tummy really hurts. I mean the really bad hurt.
It was so bad that my teacher said I had to go home from school. He said I looked a little green. I did check my hands at this point just to make sure I wasn’t having a hulk moment, but they were completely normal coloured. Phew!
But maybe the Hulk transformation actually started in his tummy, with this awfully bad pain. I wish I hadn’t eaten lunch…
“Mummy! I need a cuddle!”
I don’t like this. I really, really don’t want to turn into a giant green monster. I mean super strength would be cool. I mean, I would actually be able to lift our car. That would be so awesome!
But I really don’t want to turn green.
Mum is cleaning the patio doors and she glances over at me quizzically. Would she be looking like that if I was turning green? I would hope for a more horrified, terrified, maybe throw-in-a-loud-scream kind of reaction.
I check my hands again. Nope, still normal colour.
But oh, the pain is really, really, really bad now…
“I REALLY NEED A CUDDLE!” I yell just as my body throws itself forward and my mouth fills with yucky, burning stuff.
Mummy looks horrified.
Maybe I am turning green, maybe it’s finally happening. But I can’t look to check because my insides are swiftly becoming my outsides.
Mum literally throws the bowl of soapy water that she was using towards me, but I miss. Brown, gloopy – hmm, I really thought it would have been green – sick spreads across the floor.
And onto my socks.
Mummy is looking a little green herself. Maybe it’s catching – this turning into the hulk thing.
The floor is covered, but I did manage to get some into the bowl, floating around in the bubbles. I turn my head away – it smells quite bad.
And Mummy is making a strange sort of gagging sound herself.
My tummy still hurts. “Mummy, I still need a cuddle.”
