Pocket Money: Helping Kids Make Important Choices

Our youngest child has just started receiving pocket money. We give him a little bit of pocket money each month to help teach him how to manage his money and learn good spending and saving habits. But watching a seven-year-old make his own money decisions is both fascinating and hilarious. Here is our story…

This story is part of our Pocket Money series.

Spending My Pocket Money!

Luc (aged 7)

We have arrived. Finally.

The toy shop that we only come to when we are on holiday. Because I know exactly what I want to get.

And this time I can buy it because when you are 7 years old, you get pocket money. And I have been saving mine so I can get the teddy-dinosaur. I don’t get very much money each week, so I’ve had to save for a long time.

And I didn’t quite have enough, so I asked my Grandparents for a bit extra holiday pocket money when Mummy wasn’t looking (or listening!)

So now I’m sure I have enough pocket money.

The only problem is that there are more dinosaurs this year. Brown, blue, green. A Stegosauras, T-Rex, Diplodocus. Big, small, medium.

But it’s got to be right. It’s got to be soft. And it’s got to fit in my arms. And I need to have enough pocket money.

No, don’t get distracted. I want the green T-Rex. I need it for when we play teddy-wars at home. Or teddy-football. It can fit in the teddy-nest at the bottom of my bed.

Oh dear! Oh no! There is a giant, I mean absolutely enormous, snake! And it’s soft. And it’s blue or green or brown (I would not be even considering it if it was pink or purple!). And it doesn’t fit in my arms but who cares about that!

Maybe I could get both? Mummy looks at the price for me and helps me add it all up. I don’t have enough money.

And if I get the snake, then I won’t have any pocket money left for the giant dinosaur I saw in the catalogue at Christmas. I really want to get that dinosaur too. For my dinosaur army.

But I really like the snake. No don’t get distracted (even by the biggest teddy-snake I’ve ever seen in my entire life – it’s even bigger than Daddy!). Dinosaur army. Dinosaur army. Dinosaur army.

“I’m going to get the dinosaur!” I announce. I might get the snake next year – if I have enough dinosaurs? It’s a very big snake.

“Are you sure? You already have that dinosaur at home.” Mummy says.

Did I not mention that Mummy and Daddy got me this T-Rex teddy-dinosaur last year? It’s exactly the same.

I don’t tell her about the army plan – she might not be too happy after my first dinosaur almost lost its leg in one fierce battle and she had to sew it back on.

“It’s for my dinosaur family.” I say.
