Wasps stings are painful and can cause itching, swelling and redness. Knowing how to treat wasps and bee stings at home is useful for any parent as we head into the summer months. Here is our story…
This story is part of our Injuries & Illnesses series

There Once Was an Angry Wasp in Our Garden
Mummy (6 years parenting)
Daddy very rarely shouts. So when he does, I listen. I have only ever heard this shout once before and as that time required a trip to A&E and several stitches on Tomos’ forehead (whole other story), I immediately drop the socks I was pairing and run, I mean run downstairs.
They are collapsed in a heap in the conservatory, both frantic and loud. I can’t see any blood – bonus.
There is a half-dead wasp half crawling, half lying on the floor though.

“Help me, there’s more!” Daddy urges as he desperately tries to pull Luc’s clothes off him. Another drowsy wasp falls from Luc’s trousers.
I suddenly realise what “there’s more” actually means as Luc screeches loudly again. Wasps. Several of them. Stinging my child in front of me.
Luc yells again, his desperate struggles not helping Daddy in the least. Because of course today is the day he decided to wear his slightly-too-small jeans that require a bit more tugging over his still slightly chubby-baby thighs.

“There’s one in the shoe!”
I quickly grab go for the shoes, yanking them off, followed quickly by his socks. With one more enormous tug, Daddy hauls the jeans off Luc. More wasps drunkenly sink to the floor.
Instinct kicks in, I grab Luc tucking him into my arms and head upstairs – trying desperately not to think of that film ‘My Girl’ and the little boy who (spoiler alert) is stung to death by a swarm of bees.
I lay him down on a towel, searching his whole body to see how many and where he was stung. Wet cloths at the ready – the classic mum remedy – while quickly googling wasps stings and what to do. Also desperately trying to comfort Luc while not overreacting to words like ‘difficulty breathing’ and ’emergency hospital’.

Luc calms a little. I lie down next to him, listening intently to his breathing. Our brains and bodies reacting to the trauma of the moment. He has never had a wasp sting before so I am being hyper-vigilant.
“Mummy,” He whispers, snuggling close. “I think I need the nice medicine because the swans got me.”
Swans?
“And I’ll have to tell my teacher tomorrow about the swans hurting me.”
Oh no. I can’t help but start to giggle. He’s going to go around telling everyone that the ‘swans’ got him and well you know – that’s a totally different story!
