My January Clean Out Guide: Start Without the Kids

Mummy (11 years parenting)

The Christmas clutter is gone!! Yes.

Call me the Wicked Witch of Christmas if you want – and I’m pretty sure my kids already do.

After a month of the Christmas tree taking over a whole corner of the living room, extra random Christmas decorations dotted throughout the house haphazardly, daily deliveries of cardboard boxes, and then trying to hide those boxes filled with Christmas goodies in high-up, non obvious places as the youngest will go looking.

Rolls of wrapping paper that just made their permanent home on the spare bed. Losing the sticky tape for the millionth time. Christmas cards stuck to the back of an internal door because where else do you put them?

And then as if by magic, it’s the first day back of school and it all disappears. Back up into it’s dark spot at the back of the attic for another year.

But entering the attic while you are in the post-Christmas, New Year, crazy January clearing up frenzy is putting you in dangerous territory. This is where all the toys that the boys have grown out of or no longer need or want come to die.

And then the January decluttering fever hits and it all has to come down. Other rooms do not escape this ransacking either and the pile of toys, books and other stuff grows.

The secret to my January clear out success is simple. Don’t let the children see what you are up to.

“Mum! What are you doing?” Luc pushes the door open.

Busted.
