Make Doing Chores Easy with our 4 Simple Steps

1. When do I help?

Kids hate to be interrupted from play to do the essential daily tasks like eating, sleeping, school work and chores. So by picking some regular times throughout the day, things like housework, tidying up and cleaning start to become a habit rather than a big event.

We chose after breakfast, after lunch and after the evening meal to do our family hustle with the option to skip the after lunch on school days or days we are out doing other things.

2. Where do I help?

Allow your child to find areas where they are able to help. Good places to start include their bedroom, their regular play spaces and the area where shoes and coats are stored. There are plenty of easy chores here that even small children can help with.

For older kids, by giving them the freedom to choose where they helps to give them ownership over areas that they regularly use. They start to notice more of the daily clutter that builds up when they have to actively go and seek it out during hustle time.

3. How do I help?

Teach your children to ask themselves these simple questions during their hustling.

  • Does this live here? So can I put it away?

  • Is this dirty? So can I clean it?

The only caveat that we put in here was that if somebody was still using an item or playing with toys or a game, then they are left out until that person is finished or the next hustle time.
