How to Grow Resilience in Cautious Kids Without Damaging Confidence

Tomos (Aged 8)

One moment I was climbing down the climbing frame, and the next I was sat on the floor. I knew going to the top was a bad idea. And I told them many times. But they were so pleased that I had put myself in mortal danger, conquering fears and being so brave. What’s the point of being brave and getting to the top when you have to do it all over again to get down?

And now I’m on the ground. And they had to cheek to ask “How bad is it?”

Bad?!? It’s terrible. I just fell down and I think I landed on my ankle.

Yes, it really really hurts now that I think about it. They pull off my shoe and start prodding and rotating it. Just a slight bang, they say, be fine before you know it. Nothing broken.

Nothing is broken – no thanks to them. They look quite relieved and a little bit guilty. And then they tell me to “Walk it off!” walk it off! Are they mad?!?

Well, I can walk a little bit. The pain going already, but I’m not sure enough to be able to go to school tomorrow. After all, this one was totally their fault.
