Help Kids to Eat the Good Stuff Everyday
Luc (Aged 5)
Cottage Pie! I really don’t like cottage pie.
It’s got mince in it which is so chewy and takes so long to eat. And onions. Gross! And it’s all mixed in together, so it’s just yucky, yucky and more yucky.
I like toast – brown toast or white. Marmalade or jam or honey. I just really like toast – especially the crusts.
Toast is easy to eat and cheese slices and crisps – I like crisps too. We did a science experiment at school to see what flavours of crisps we each liked. I liked all of them.
“What did you say Mummy?”
Pick up my spoon? I suppose so…

I manage to put the smallest amount of potato on my spoon – the bit that isn’t touching any mince or onion.
And start to chew.
Chewing takes a long time you know. Do you know what else takes a long time to eat? Apples.
Especially when they don’t cut them up like at school and then it takes ages just to even take a bite. I don’t eat apples at school.
I like milk at school. And at home. But it’s got to be really cold. I don’t like warm milk. Sometimes at school…
“What Daddy?”
Try a bit more. There is chocolate yoghurt for pudding. I look down at the cottage pie that is still waiting to be eaten. I do wonder why we have to eat tea every day!

Do you think pirates had to eat every day? I wonder what pirates used to eat.
I’m sure it was toast and honey. I would definitely eat pirate food everyday then.
Maybe that’s what all their battles were about. They didn’t want treasure, they wanted honey. Or marmalade. I make my hands into two pirates fighting over the toast with their giant cannons.
One is defeated. I crash my hand onto the table and pretend it’s dead.
Can I eat a bit more? Maybe some of the carrots? Apparently I like carrots.

I think carrots could be poison because they are orange. And then the orange honey could poison all the pirates – and all the pirates would be dead.
I take another scoop (just of the carrots), “Urgh, it’s poison. I’m dead.” I let out a long dead groan and close my eyes because I’m dead, the poison got me.
But then I take a sneak peek to check they are all laughing. So much more fun than eating cottage pie. But I think I’ll come back to life for chocolate yoghurt.
