Starting School Separation Anxiety: Why is Everyone Crying?
Tomos (aged 4)
All the grown-ups have been talking about school for ages: Mummy, Daddy, my nursery teacher and even the old people who sometimes like to talk to us when we are walking to the park or in the shops have been asking about me going to school.
Everyone said it would be really fun. They said that I would make loads of brand new friends, build giant towers and play with lots of play-doh and it probably wouldn’t matter if I mixed up the colours. Mummy really doesn’t like it when I do that at home. There would be bikes to ride and a big obstacle course to play on outside. But they didn’t tell me the truth.
The truth is, school is exhausting.
There are so many things to remember. My coat goes on the last peg with the picture of a tractor next to the letters of my name. All the children have different names from nursery and I can’t really remember which ones goes with which friend.
The carpet is scratchy and one of the children has already been sick all over it. It was gross and it smelled really bad. That little boy hasn’t come back to school yet. I think he might have got into lots of trouble.
My little brother gets into lots of trouble too. When Mummy drops me off, Luc tries to sneak inside but he is only 2 years old so he is not allowed. He always cries when Mummy has to put him back in the pram. Then I cry because they get go home and I have to stay in school. Then Mummy tries not to cry but sometimes her eyes look a bit shiny.
School is not great at all. It just makes everyone cry.
